SPRING VALLEY--A group of Spring Valley students spent two weeks this summer learning to design, construct, program and test autonomous robots in a Deep Space Terraformers summer class. The class had an astronomy theme and students learned about the process of terraforming.
PRESCOTT -- A rollover accident on the Hwy. 10 bridge at Prescott temporarily closed the highway as police and emergency personnel assisted a woman injured in the crash. Authorities were notified of the accident, said to be just onto the Minnesota side of the crossing, at about 7:50 a.m. The woman reportedly suffered a serious hand injury and she was transported directly to Regions Hospital in St.
"I love to eat dessert first," the Prescott man said as he munched on cake. He smiled and said, "The problem is you don't have room for the good things you need to eat." The first course of dessert in the state budget is a tax cut for about seventy five percent of tax filers.
Wisconsin's maple syrup harvest for this spring is the biggest in at least 21 years. The USDA said today that the Badger State made 265-thousand gallons of syrup this year. That's five times as much as a year ago, when an early spring cut the sap season short. Officials said this year's sugar content was up. Only 34 gallons of sap were needed to make a gallon of maple syrup. That's down from 44 gallons a year ago. Wisconsin is the nation's fourth-largest syrup-producer. Vermont is No.
MADISON - Republican leaders are still confident that the current version of the new budget is basically the one that will pass both houses this week. The state Assembly is scheduled to start debating the two-year, $68-billion package of spending and new policies. They're expected to take a break tonight before approving the budget tomorrow. It would then go to the state Senate on Thursday. A spokeswoman for Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Burlington) says that what she calls a "technical amendment" is being drafted - but she would not go into details.
EAU CLAIRE - A body was pulled yesterday from the Chippewa River in Eau Claire. Police said canoeists spotted what appeared to be a body near the Short Street Bridge around 5:50 p.m. Fire Department rescuers launched a boat, and recovered the body about 40 minutes later about a quarter-mile from the bridge. There was no word on the person's identity.
EAU CLAIRE - A former business partner is suing Eau Claire billionaire John Menard. Tomisue Hilbert claims that the home improvement magnate pressured her for sex, and later retaliated by firing her husband and filing suits against them and their friends. The 43-year-old Hilbert filed her suit in Hamilton County, Indiana. She accused Menard of extortion, battery, assault, and a breach of fiduciary duty for firing her husband Steve as the CEO of a private equity firm that Menard and the Hilberts started in 2005 in Indianapolis. Menard's attorney denies any inappropriate conduct.
RUSHFORD, Minn. - A man died after he was accidentally hit by shrapnel during a bachelor-bachelorette party in southeastern Minnesota.
ST. PAUL - A St. Paul market was raided after several people became ill after using drugs purchased there, and Ramsey County Sheriff's officials say one of the overdoses was fatal. The investigation began after the sheriff's department received a tip that two people were selling medications and giving medical advice at Hmongtown Marketplace, including administering injections and IV's. The raid turned up hundreds of pounds of drugs, including unmarked and mismarked pills.
HOUSTON - The Milwaukee Brewers have had solid pitching from their starters - and they hope to keep it going tonight, when they open a three-game Interleague series at Houston. The Milwaukee starters have combined for a 2.26 ERA in their last nine games - six of which were won by the Crew. Before that, the Brewers went 3-and-10 in which the starters had a 7.62 ERA. Left-fielder Logan Schafer says the entire team is feeding off the success of the pitchers. In his words, "It's been great lately." Houston has also had strong starters lately. Their ERA is 2.02 during their last five games.
